Why I am a trustee at Move More

Move More has a wonderful set of values and a simple but compelling vision: Every Child Active.  I know the power that sport and activity has to change lives, from physical and mental health to wider social outcomes.  Move More has an incredible impact on children across Gloucestershire and it is a privilege to help guide their strategy over the coming years to increase their reach and deepen the long lasting impact of their work.

Steve Savory OBE

Why I Am A TRUSTEE AT MOVE MORE

I believe encouraging young people to become more involved with sport and activity as well as gaining knowledge around healthy living promotes long term physical and mental health benefits. There is an intrinsic enjoyment in sport and youngsters have fun as well. I believe these activities develop confidence in young people to enable them to face the ever increasing pressures from a social media society. Move More as an organisation is a forward thinking and committed team dedicated to bringing these benefits to as many young people as possible.

Liam Wilkinson

Safeguarding Lead Trustee

Background

Following an injury curtailed career as an Army Officer, I undertook a degree in Sports Science and Physiology at Leeds University. I then trained to teach Maths and PE and was selected for the Fast track Head Teacher programme. I have led various subjects and projects in schools in Birmingham before moving to All Saints’ Academy in Cheltenham, as Assistant Principal in 2013. I was appointed Vice Principal in 2015 and am currently acting as interim principal. I have been married for 10 years to Sarah and have twin daughters, Olive and Juno.

Why I am a Trustee at Move More

I have thrived personally and professionally because of the impact of sport and exercise throughout my early life, when my family circumstances were consistently challenging. Having had opportunities to attend sports camps and work with coaches from primary age upward led me to make positive life choices. The mission of Move More is to support young people in doing this through a variety of interconnected approaches and to be involved in supporting this in any way that I can is a privilege.

Caryn Smith

Background

Caryn is the Head Teacher at St James’ C of E Primary, Cheltenham. She has been in the teaching profession for 24 years, with experience of teaching children from Reception to Year 6. Caryn is the ‘PE and Sports Funding Strategic Lead’, developing a culture where Physical Education and active pupils is at the heart of her school. St James’ has been a pilot school in Cheltenham for using the CAS (Creating Active Schools) framework.  Caryn’s vision is that PE and Sport at St James is not only about giving the pupils the fundamental skills they need to be active but that they are given a variety of experiences which gives them a love of being active in school, outside of school and with their families. In 2016/2017 Caryn was a Farmington Scholar at Oxford University to develop a visual model to support teachers in understanding Spiritual Growth. As a result of this project, Caryn has co-written a chapter about developing a ‘Vision Driven Curriculum’ in a book called ‘Inspiring Primary Curriculum Design’.

Why I am a Trustee at Move More

At St James’ our vision is ‘Inspiring and Growing For Fullness of Life’. I am passionate about giving our pupils the foundations they need to be active throughout their life, which is so important for our pupils to have ‘fullness of life’. Move More has played an integral part in supporting our school, not only with our PE and Sport provision but also the mental health and wellbeing of our pupils. I am priveledged  to be a Trustee at Move More and part of their future journey in giving children the opportunity to be active, healthy and happy.

Why I am a Trustee at Move More

I’ve always led an active life and have enjoyed participating in many sports over the years. Excelling in precisely none of them! Which hasn’t mattered in the slightest – it’s been the taking part that’s been important. We don’t all have the ability and aspiration to reach “elite” standards. Move More endeavours to get all children active and I’m very proud to be a part of this forward looking and innovative organisation.

Claire Coulter

Why I am a Trustee at Move More

My family have experienced first-hand the quality holiday provision Move More provides.   It has been great to see my son grow in confidence as he tries new things and is supported to make new friends.  This positive experience led me to explore more about Move More and its ambition to ensure all children in our local area benefit physically and mentally from being active.  Complex mental health conditions run in my family and I am keen to ensure young people have the tools they need to look after their own mental health.  I am a keen runner having completed Couch to 5K back in 2019 and I enjoy Pilates and yoga in my spare time.  Move More’s values align strongly with my own, it is an honour to be part of the team as they evolve and widen their reach helping even more young people to engage with physical activity as part of a wider wellbeing strategy.

Why I am a Trustee at Move More

I have benefited hugely from sport and have been fortunate enough to help many others on their own journeys as participants and coaches. I want all young people to be active, to know the joy of sport and to feel the benefits that it can bring. My hopes for young people align with the vision of Move More, which is what attracted me to becoming a Trustee.  It’s an honour to support this organisation and I hope to help it to grow the number of young people who benefit from its valuable work.

Professor Derek Peters

Trustee

Background

I am a Professor of Sport, Health & Exercise Science in the School of Allied Health & Community at the University of Worcester, a Fellow of both the British Association of Sport & Exercise Sciences and the European College of Sport Sciences, a Higher Education Academy National Teaching Fellow and lead the University’s Human Performance Research Group.  I have over 30 years’ experience teaching, researching, and publishing nationally and internationally across disciplines relevant to children and adults’ sport participation, physical activity, health and wellbeing.  I am also a trustee of Together Active, the Active Partnership for Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent.

Why I am a Trustee at Move More

I am very fortunate to have had an active, sporty and healthy childhood.  I continued my engagement in sport and activity throughout my school and university journeys and have since made a career out of teaching and researching sport, activity and health.  Multiple facilitators of, and barriers to an active and healthy childhood have been ever present, but recently social media and technology seem to have tipped the balance towards inactivity and reduced health in childhood.  As an academic I am keen to both translate research evidence to, and promote generation of local evidence with Move More in order to support its mission to combat inactivity and provide successful opportunities for all children to move more, more often.
