Who is this course designed for?
This training programme has been specially developed to help school teachers, HLTA, volunteers in a school and PGCE students gain the right skills and knowledge to deliver quality school swimming lessons to meet national curriculum requirements.
Support Teacher of School Swimming
The course covers core aquatic skills and water safety, enabling you to support lessons in line with national curriculum requirements. Once qualified, trainees will be equipped to actively assist in the delivery of school swimming lessons to small groups of similar ability pupils.
The course covers how to:
- How to identify activities that will positively impact students learning
- Engage with pupils, helping them to progress
- Key Stages 1 and 2 programmes of study
- Health and Safety considerations of organising and delivering a school swimming programme
- How swimming and water safety can be delivered to meet school swimming outcomes.
Online Learning – 6 hours (approx)
Support Teacher and Teacher of School Swimming
In addition to the Support Teacher of School Swimming content above, the course covers planning and evaluating a school swimming programme. This programme will help you to understand:
- Use aquatic activities to support and enhance learning in other areas of the PE
- national curriculum.
- Understand the technical aspects of the four strokes
- Identify key considerations when developing lesson plans
- Create, deliver and evaluate lesson plans
- Describe the key aspects of communication in relation the delivering lessons
Trainees are required to teach groups of pupils. Additional elements for the practical session can include;
- Stroke analysis
- Presenter leading a swimming session
- Candidates in the water
Blended Learning – 6 hours of online learning followed by 1 day face to face
This is a blended learning course where you complete the theoretical elements of the course online through interactive activities and checks on learning, prior to the practical workshops where you will get the opportunity to deliver a session.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Support Teacher and Teacher of School Swimming qualification will qualify the candidates to plan and deliver school swimming lessons; however, whether they need additional qualifications or pool side support will depend on the venue’s risk assessment and requirements.
Number of spaces available
You must be at least 18 years of age at the start of the course.
PART ONE – Online self-guided learning (approximately 8 hours maximum) Must be completed before the 12th March 2024.
PART TWO – 1 full day face to face theory (including pool time practical assessment) at CLC Health and Fitness Centre, Malvern Road, Cheltenham GL50 2NX. Lunch will be provided.
