Event Type

Teams of 4 children from years 3 and 4. The team must consist of 2 mixed doubles pairs.

The aim of the evening is for children to experience and enjoy playing mini tennis. It will takes a festival format, with matches scored but no overall results produced. School Games wristbands will be awarded at the end.

Courts will be a mini court across one quarter of the full tennis court with a low net. ‘Big red’ (yellow and red) balls will be used.

Game length will be approximately 6 minutes. Scoring will be simple 1,2,3,4 etc. Players will have 2 chances at serve, and serve in rotation with 2 serves/points each. Serve will start with the right hand court player and they can serve anywhere over the net (does not have to be diagonal). After 2 points, the serve goes to their team mate on their left and then after another 2 points, over to the opposing right hand court player etc. Serve will be decided with the umpire at the start of each game.

This is different to the Level 2 tournaments run through the LTA where singles play occurs. With doubles we can get more children playing and there is slightly less pressure for new players.

Games will be demonstrated at the beginning. Players can be inexperienced although the ability to serve underarm and have basic ground strokes (forehand and backhand) is needed.
